Kinston tries to break swimming lesson world record

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – People in Kinston tried to help break the world’s record for the largest swimming lesson Thursday.

The event was put on by the Guiness Book of World Records.Water parks all around the world offered swimming lessons at the same time. The event cost five dollars and was open to children of all ages. The purpose of the event was to help promote water safety, specifically for children.

Vicki Labell with Red Cross said, “we want our folks to be safe in and around water at all times, whether they are going to a party at the pool or they are going to the beach on the coast. We want to make sure they have the opportunity to learn how to swim.”

About 150 people participated in the event. More than 34,000 people from around the world took part last year.
