New laws for moped drivers start July 1

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Motor scooter drivers only have until July 1st to register their mopeds with the state of North Carolina or they will face fines. Jimmy Stallings of Ron Ayers Motor Sports says some scooters already have tags, but most don’t.

“Everything in the state of North Carolina, everything over 50 CC’s you have to have a license, insurance and tags like a regular motorcycle. Those do run a lot faster, up to 80 miles an hour.”

Stallings says most people buy the smaller scooters because it saves gas and it doesn’t require a license.

Starting July 1st, it will cost 18 dollars to get a plate and registration. The scooter owner will not receive a title for the scooter, and won’t need an inspection.

State Troopers say it’s important to know the rules of the road when riding a scooter. If you don’t have a North Carolina license, you are required to have an identification card to receive a registration.

“If you’re on the roadway and if you’re operating a vehicle or moped, the rules of the road still are the same. If you are impaired and operating a moped and you will be charged the same if you’re stopped,” said Trooper Coley.

Another bill is being considered in the senate to require all smaller scooters to have insurance. If that bill is passed, Stallings says the state needs a plan in place to help pay the costs.

“A state supported insurance type, kind of like an Obama care insurance that these people could get a very reasonable price with a limited amount of coverage and liability, that would be great,” said Stallings.
