2 arrested in 1987 rape, kidnapping case

Jerry Jones, Etharay Johnson

BEAUFORT, N.C. (WNCT) – A case almost 30 years old is back in the spotlight and two men are behind bars facing charges for kidnapping and rape.

It happened in Carteret County.

65 year old Jerry Jones and 62 year old Etharay Jefferson were indicted on charges of sexually and physically assaulting a 13-year old girl. Prosecutors say the two left her in a field near West Carteret High School.

The victim required extensive treatment and rehab. The charge was dismissed with leave to re-file the charge at a later time.

The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office and Morehead City Police renewed their investigation, leading to the current charges.

The victim was able to identify her attackers and can now testify at trial.

Both are held under $1 million bonds and are expected to appear in court in July.
