Washington picks new mayor pro tem after split vote

Councilman Doug Mercer tapped as new Mayor Pro Tem.

WASHINGTON, N.C. – The Washington Town Council approved the new leader who will handle the city when the mayor’s not available.

Members were split on Monday with Councilman Doug Mercer going up against Councilman William Pitt.

With current pro tem Bobby Roberson leaving to take over as interim city manager, Mayor Mac Hodges was able to cast the swaying vote for Mercer.

The council will now work to replace Roberson.

Councilman Pitt told WNCT there are several ways they could do that including asking for the public to apply.

At the June 22 meeting, the council will likely pick a way to get the new council member. Pitt tells WNCT that the position could be filled by July.

Roberson takes over as city manager officially later this month.
