Martin Community Action gives up federal funding

WILLIAMSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – Martin Community Action gives up its federal funding, keeping parents in limbo about the care of their children.

A letter sent by the Department of Health and Human Services confirms the loss of funds from the Head Start program. It says the board’s decision to relinquish Head Start funds is effective May 31st.

As a result, an organization out of Colorado will run the program until a new place is found for Head Start in the area.

A county leader also confirms the CEO, Bernnadette Yarborough, is no longer with the agency.
Calls to MCA’s board chair were not returned.

Around 550 children used the programs at Martin Community Action.

Local leaders say they’re working to get another entity in place before the start of next school year.
