North Carolina Republicans are gathering to get revved up for next year’s big elections and to hear from a few national politicians who want to be president.

The state GOP begins its biennial convention Friday in downtown Raleigh. The three-day event includes hundreds of delegates performing usual party business, including Saturday’s election of a successor to Chairman Claude Pope. Gaston County’s Craig Collins is considered the heavy favorite.

Republican presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz and Ben Carson have speaking slots at the convention, as does Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, another potential candidate. Gov. Pat McCrory will deliver Saturday’s keynote address. McCrory and Sen. Richard Burr – who’s also speaking – are running for re-election in 2016.

Donald Trump headlines Saturday night’s festivities at the Raleigh Convention Center.
