Beaufort County Schools Superintendent Don Phipps was unanimously selected as the superintendent of the year for North Carolina’s district 1. The district covers 17 counties, including Pitt and Martin counties. The recognition was voted on by superintendents in the district.
Phipps has been superintendent in the county since 2010, but has never received any type of recognition like this. He says the honor speaks volumes to what is happening in county schools.
“Any accolades or recognition that I receive I’m honored by that. But I would be foolish to think that I’m not standing on the shoulders of many other individuals and I’m able to receive that because of the hard work that the folks that I work with do every single day,” Phipps said.
He now moves on to the state superintendent competition, where the winner will be announced in the Fall. If selected to represent the state, Phipps would then move on to the national superintendent of the year competition.
