ENFIELD, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina authorities are investigating a Virginia man’s death while in police custody in Halifax County.
The State Bureau of Investigation said Monday police in Enfield asked the SBI to investigate the death of 55-year-old Michael Tyrone Gallagher of Midlothian, Virginia.
The SBI says Enfield Lt. Jerry Powell responded to a reported breaking and entering late Saturday and confronted Gallagher. The officer used his stun gun during a fight.
Emergency medical workers took Gallagher to Halifax County Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, where he died Sunday.
An autopsy will seek the cause of death. Powell has been placed on leave while the SBI investigates Gallagher’s death.
The SBI referred a request for the incident report to Enfield police. Police said it was prepared by Halifax sheriff’s deputies, who didn’t respond.
