A big honor for a small-town student-athlete. On Thursday, Columbia High School junior Johndre’ Bowser was named one of 20 finalists nationwide for the prestigious Award for Excellence by the U.S. Army and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The award honors high school students for their achievements on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.

It was a packed house Thursday as Pro Football Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews presented Bowser with the accolade. Bowser also earned an invitation to attend the 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Weekend in August. Matthews spent his entire career with the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans. However, the Hall of Fame offensive lineman is a North Carolina native, born in Raleigh and grew up in Washington.
