Wilson police say they’re investigating a crime trend.
They say a large number of firearms are being stolen from cars.
In a video posted to YouTube, Captain Eric Smith details the problem. He says, from 2013 to 2014, 134 firearms were stolen and 53 of them were taken from vehicles.
“In 80 percent of those cases, firearms were taken from unlocked vehicles,” explained Captain Eric Smith. “This means that nearly one-third of firearms stolen from unlocked vehicles.”
Smith says this is a trend that you can help end.
He offers several tips:
• Never leave your gun un-attended in your car or truck
• Take the firearm out of the car overnight
• Keep a good record of your make, model, caliber and serial number, in a separate location
• Always report the theft of a firearm immediately
