May is National Bike Month, and this week, many schools are hosting Bike To School Days on Wednesday.

Students at Jacksonville Commons Elementary and Middle School had an opportunity to ride to school with a police escort Wednesday morning.

WNCT 9 On Your Side caught up with students at The Oakwood School in Greenville Tuesday, where they were raising awareness for bike safety.

In North Carolina, it’s the law that you have to wear a helmet if you’re under 16. And Stefanie Keen with Active Routes To School says adults should wear them too.

“For other motorists, and adults, it’s also about wearing your helmet and setting an example for the children,” explained Stefanie Keen, Active Routes To School. “It may not be the law, but it’s important that they do that as well.”

The event builds on the popularity of Walk To School Day, which is celebrated across the country and the world each October.

Again, be vigilant out there Wednesday as you may come across students biking to school.
