Windsor Police are investigating after a corrections officer at the Bertie Correctional Institute was assaulted over the weekend, according to Chief James Lane.

Police say they were notified of the assault at 12:15 a.m. on Sunday.  Officer Mavin Garris, 35, who lives in Rich Square, told police he and other officers were escorting ten inmates out of a cell block when he was attacked.  Garris was taken to Vidant Bertie Hospital in Windsor with serious eye, head and face injuries.

Police say inmate William Allen Jr., 26, is suspected of the attack.  He is currently serving time at Bertie Correctional for second degree murder and armed robbery.  Charges were pending as of Monday morning.

We are working with authorities to get an update on Garris’ condition.
