The Extreme Park at Jaycee Park in Greenville may get more extreme with an expansion to the skate park. The new expansion would replace the hockey rink. Parents say it’s a long time coming.
“It would help out a whole lot; I hope they seriously think about doing it,” Joey Woolard said.
Woolard brings his 9-year old son to the park often. He’s one of many who travels just to get to this park. Woolard says some days it’s packed and his child has to wait in line just to ride his scooter.
“It would be nice to have it bigger, you get nine or 10 bikes out here, it’s really crowded, you have to watch out for the younger people,” said Woolard.
The Extreme Park is the only one of its kind in Greenville. If approved, the street hockey area would be redesigned into a street inspired park with ramps and benches that cater to all ages and all types of riders. Currently the park is designed for skilled riders with the lowest obstacle being 6 feet. The track was influenced years ago by BMX riders that lived in Greenville. Eric Granda, a biker, says he wants more choices when it comes to riding at the park.
“Just opens it up more, and it’s more of an option on what to do. We’re not all crammed together, so it would be better,” said Eric Granda.
Granda says the new expansion would provide more room for people to ride.
“I use to skateboard and ride scooters so I’m more open to everyone being able to come out to the park instead of just one activity,” explained Granda.
Greenville Advocates for Public Skate Parks say they want to make a useless space useful and adding extra riding room to benefit everyone. Woolard says he hopes this new space opens soon.
“It would open up a lot of opportunities for a lot of kids to come out and have room to get better at what they want to do and maybe have a future in either scooters or bikes,” said Woolard.
