Nominate a STEM Teacher of the Month – Overview

The STEM Teacher of the Month Program is conducted through a partnership with WNCT and STEM East, a subsidiary of North Carolina’s Eastern Alliance. The success of the program depends greatly on the numerous businesses, associations, organizations, and higher education institutions that typically sponsor and/or support the program.

Goals

  • To recognize and honor STEM teachers who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, innovation and excellence in teaching
  • To expose best practices in teaching
  • To support the development of private/public partnerships
  • To advance a communication network among educators, employers, and the community
  • To positively impact educational issues and policies

Eligibility
To be eligible for selection as a STEM Teacher of the Month, a person must hold a Standard Professional 2 (SP2) license, be employed full time and spend at least 70% of his or her time in direct instruction of North Carolina school students. Potential awardees should be exceptionally skillful and dedicated teachers who are innovative, creative and know how to build partnerships. They should also be respected members of both their school and community. Eligible applicants will teach in one of the following counties; Beaufort, Bertie, Carteret, Craven, Duplin, Greene, Hyde, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Onslow, Pamlico, Pitt, Tyrell, and Washington.

Program Definition of STEM Education Observed
STEM Education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy. (Tsupros, 2009)

Process
1) Applicants or Nominators should complete the electronic APPLICATION FORM located on the WNCT website.
2) Only current cycle applications are reviewed by the committee:
(Note: The review committee rubric is developed from NCDPI STEM Attributes.)

Three teachers and one alternate will be selected during cycle one.

Three teachers and one alternate will be selected during cycle one. (Jan. 1 Deadline: February, March, April)

Four teachers and one alternate will be selected during cycle two. (April 1 Deadline: May, June, September, October)

Three teachers and one alternate will be selected during cycle three. (Oct. 1 Deadline: November, December, January )

3) Applicants can resubmit for each cycle but will be awarded only once per school year.
