A parent in Beaufort County says the principal at her son’s school is setting a bad example by being a bully himself. 9 On Your Side uncovered this during a bullying investigation.

“I was pissed off, I really was.” Topeka Hopkins, mother to Jesse Hopkins says her son’s principal assaulted him on April 4th. They say it happened during a moment of silence for New Bern fallen officer Alexander Thalmann.

“I was on the phone and he (Principal Russell Holloman) came fussing at me for no reason. He kept talking and fussing for no reason and then said ain’t nothing worse than the man at New Bern. And then he just kept fussing. So I got up and kept walking and tried to walk off but that’s when he grabbed me.” Jesse Hopkins said.

Outraged by Principal Holloman’s alleged actions, Hopkins took greater offense to comments he made. “He told my son that he was just as useless as the man they killed in New Bern. That’s what really made me mad.”

At first Hopkins says school officials told her Jesse assaulted the principal and they suspended him for it,  but she also says they later come back to admit her son had done nothing at all.

Hopkins who wanted Holloman disciplined says instead of being fired, Holloman chose to retire at the end of the year.
“If he is resigning, they really didn’t do anything. He’s just resigning at the end of the school year and he’s still there.”
In a statement Beaufort County Schools denies that Principal Holloman resigned because an internal investigation revealed he assaulted a student. A spokesperson for the school says if Beaufort County Schools had evidence that a principal had assaulted a student an immediate report would have been made to law enforcement.
The Beaufort County NAACP is aware of the situation and says they are evaluating their options. The president of the organization also said since these allegations surfaced, teachers at Washington High School have come forward alleging Holloman of threatening and intimidating them too.

9 On Your Side called Holloman, but he hasn’t returned our calls.

This is not the first time Jesse has been suspended, but Hopkins says just because her son may be problematic at times, doesn’t give Holloman a righ to put a hand on him.

Since this story ran, parents and students have called 9 On Your Side showing their support for Principal Holloman calling him a hard-working man just doing his job. Students also wrote in to say they have never witnessed any such behavior from Mr. Holloman but have witnessed Jesse being very disrespectful and inconsiderate.
